PREFACE

This is the third edition of this textbook whose primary objective is to present the concept of the basic fundamentals of engineering materials on the level appropriate for university/college students who have completed their freshmen calculus, mathematics, chemistry, and physics courses. The second objective is to present the material in a logical order, from the simple to the more complex. The third objective is to present problems and their solutions with the aim of giving the students a very good exercise in using the theoretical knowledge and equations to solve practical problems.

A broad background of engineering materials required by the engineer in the practice of his profession is provided by this textbook ; its content helps the engineer in bringing ideas and designs into reality.

This textbook is intended for use in the different departments (mechanical, electrical, electronic, computer science, civil, and architectural engineering departments) of faculties of engineering in Yemen and abroad. This textbook is also intended for use by students of applied sciences. Postgraduates who have had no previous exposure to the subject should also find this textbook useful.

The present textbook may be used with or without a laboratory, and rearrangement of chapters is possible to meet specific course requirements.

I wish to acknowledge the assistance I have taken in preparing this book from the large number of textbooks of renewed authors (bibliography given at the end of this book).
