PREFACE
This book is designed to meet therequirements of beginner users of computers; also it is intended to be areference for both instructors and students. In this scope, it contains thefundamental concepts in the field of computer science and engineering. Its mainobjective is to serve as a theoretical and practical support destined for thestudents who attend the first course entitled “introduction to computers” or“essentials of computer organization and programming”. Also, it is planned tobe used as a basic aid for all the beginners who start using personalcomputers. For this reason, special emphasis is given for the IBM compatiblemicrocomputers, that are generally known as personal computers or PCs.
The material is organized in eightchapters. The first chapter, entitled computer development and architecture,deals with the main concepts in this field and the basic organization ofcomputers. It explains briefly the structural entities of microcomputers andtheir uses, also it introduces the terminology used in this field.
Chapter 2, data representation andnumber systems, deals mainly with the essential alphanumerical codes usedin computers, as well as the different numbering systems and conversion betweenthem. Chapter 3, is concerned with the operating systems and mainworking environment of IBM compatible computers.
Chapter 4, initiation to computer algorithms, establishes themain ideas in software side, and emphasizes the difference between algorithmsand programs. It explains the main types of program flowcharts via examples.
Chapter 5, ProgrammingLanguages And Fundamental Programming concepts, explains the mainprogramming data types and concepts by the aid of a wide range of problems andexamples.
The nextstep is to initiate the student to programming with Q-BASIC language (chapter 6), or with Pascal language(chapter 7). The teacher can choose one of these two chapters.
Appendix Acontains many practical works concerning the hardware, the operating system (DOSand Windows), Windows applications (WordPad), and Pascal programming language.
